1. The Holy Spirit acts in people and in the Church
2. The Holy Spirit appears in Bible stories
3. The Holy Spirit is the third person the Trinity
4. We have images of the Holy Spirit but these are not the Holy Spirit
Two important stories that children should know about the Holy Spirit are the Baptism of Jesus and the story of Pentecost
Mark 1:9-11New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)
The Baptism of Jesus
9 In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptised by John in the Jordan. 10 And just as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit descending like a dove on him. 11 And a voice came from heaven, “You are my Son, the Beloved;[a] with you I am well pleased.”
The Baptism of Jesus is the first time we see the Trinity together in the Bible. Jesus is there, the Holy Spirit is there as a dove and God the Father is there – he speaks.
Acts of the Apostles
2 When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place.2 And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. 3 Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability
Jesus promised He would send an Advocate to help his disciples after he was gone. He sent the Holy Spirit. Before that the disciples were hiding and scared. After that they went out and spread the Word of God.
Pentecost was the coming of the Holy Spirit. It was the birth day of the Church. The Holy Spirit is still in God’s Church on earth.
